Insomnia is a sleeping disorder. It is characterized by someone having constant difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep. By definition insomnia is not a disease it is a symptom, it is difficulty in initiating sleep or maintaining it this maybe due to the lack of and quality of sleep. There are 3 types of insomnia transient, acute and chronic. Some risks of insomnia are the body is weakened meaning a poorer immune system making you vulnerable to viruses, risk of diabetes, lower performance, risk of depression, slower reaction times, risk of anxiety, risk of heart disease and the risk of becoming overweight or obese.

Transient insomnia is when the sleeping has been an issue over a few weeks. This type of insomnia is usually caused by another disorder such as stress, change in sleeping times or depression.

Acute insomnia is the inability to consistently sleep well over a period of about three to six months.
Chronic insomnia can last up to years. The effects can vary person to person some people can suffer with hallucinations, muscular fatigue. Chronic insomnia shows increased awareness, some people who suffer with this can see things moving in slow motion and certain objects blend together. Insomnia can cause double vision.

Insomnia effects one in three people. There are four stages in which insomnia is patterned. Onset insomnia is difficulty falling asleep at the beginning of the night which is often associated with anxiety disorders. Middle of the night insomnia is difficulty returning to sleep after awakening in the middle of the night or waking too early in the morning. Also referred to as nocturnal awakenings. Middle insomnia waking during the middle of the night, difficulty maintaining sleep. Often associated with pain or medical illness. Terminal insomnia is early morning waking. Often a characteristic of depression.

Insomnia can be caused by drugs or stimulants, menstruation or menopause, fear, stress, anxiety, mental disorders, jet lag, oestrogen, parasites and so on. For some people with insomnia they tend to rely on sleeping pills or other sedatives that the doctor prescribes to them. The problem with taking pills for the problem means you become dependant on them meaning you can not get yourself unhooked and without them you can not survive. Elderly people are more at risk of the side effects of these medication that younger people. Some doctors may suggest to people with insomnia they go to a sleeping clinic in order for them to learn how to control it and sleep naturally rather than using medicines and using medicines for a long period can cause damaged to the body. Some people who suffer with insomnia prefer to use herbs such as lavender, passion flower and chamomile. Also in recent studies insomnia may be a symptom of magnesium deficiency or low magnesium levels. A healthy diet containing magnesium can help to improve sleep in individuals without an adequate intake of magnesium.

These days there are a lot of books based on insomnia which gives help to those who suffer. It gives things to try and things for them to relate with. The NHS also offers help and support for people who suffer with insomnia and give them advice. There are many people who write books about insomnia that have experienced it themselves, which gives hints and tips for others to try before resorting to medications. You can find a list of these books at shops or on the internet or even at libraries.
